Y9 Subject Evening

Explaining your Curriculum ready for Year 10

Here is your Transitions Book for 2024.

You will given the link for the form with your subject options on the Subject Evening of the 24th of April. We will operate on a first come, first served basis with subject choices. If you don't attend the Subject Evening, there is a strong likelihood that your child will not get the subject choice they want. You will have until the 26th of April to submit your form. You will be able to book your appointment closer to the time.

In Years 10 and 11 all of our students follow the English Baccalaureate or EBacc pathway. The EBacc provides you with a very broad curriculum: English Language and Literature, Mathematics, Double Science, a modern foreign language (French or Spanish or Panjabi) and History or Geography and, in addition, students study GCSE RE.

A study by the UCL Institute of Education shows that studying subjects included in the EBacc provides students with greater opportunities in further education and increases the likelihood that a pupil will stay on in full-time education. Sutton Trust research reveals that studying the EBacc can help improve a young person’s performance in English and maths.

Because you are already following such a broad core pathway, we have kept the number of “free” optional subjects to one. The quality of the final grade is always far more important than the quantity of grades.

Each student will take the following subjects (your MFL choice will be the language you are already doing) and you can choose between Geography or History:

1 Maths
2 English Language
3 English Literature
4 MFL
5 RE
6 Geography or History
7 Dual Science
8 Dual Science

You will then choose your ninth subject from the list below (select a favourite subject and one that you are good at):

  • GCSE Art
  • GCSE Textiles
  • GCSE Graphics
  • GCSE Dance
  • GCSE Drama
  • GCSE Food Technology
  • GCSE Music
  • GCSE PE
  • GCSE Business
  • BTEC Health & Social Care
  • Computer Science*
  • Triple Science**

*You can only select Computer Science if you are in set one or two for Maths and with the agreement of the Head of Computer Science

**You can only select Triple Science if you are in set one or two for Science and with the agreement of the Head of Science. Note that you don't need to have studied Triple Science to take up any of the Science A Levels.

Students will be asked to rank their top 3 subjects for their option. They will find out more in assembly, from the options book above and from their subject teachers. We will be running a subject evening on the 24th of April for parents to make sure all students have selected the best subject for their future.

All students will also study the following subjects alongside their GCSEs.

  • PE (recreational)
  • PSHE
  • Citizenship
  • Careers
