We recognise the value of offering our students a broad and comprehensive health and social care curriculum, which ties to the whole school's strategic plan. We use the Pearson BTEC curriculum since it was developed with significant industry involvement and visits from educators, nurses, and biological scientists, and it connects to the subject matter being taught. Our department helps students identify their own skills and abilities through the Health and Social Care curriculum, which enables them to pursue their own interests and goals. We can direct students to resources, work experience, and courses relevant to these occupations through our industry relationships. 

Our goal is to provide our students with current subject knowledge and information by utilising the professional backgrounds of our teachers, which include nursing, sociological analysis, and psychology practice. To guarantee that our highly specialised topic knowledge, which is not covered as a formal subject in KS1, 2, or 3, is available to our students join our subject in year 10 where we have a thorough understanding of pedagogy in our discipline inside our department. 

As a department, we work hard to meet the needs of all our students, including EAL and SEND students. To make sure that our EAL students can access the required content in lessons, we make use of the translating abilities of our subject-specific teaching assistants. Our SEND children receive differentiated work and support on Google Classroom in addition to one-on-one assistance during lessons. For our KS4 and KS5 students to expand and deepen their topic knowledge and comprehension in Health and Social Care, they must attain a high level of academic literacy and oracy with a subject focus. 

The curriculum intends all our students to become: 

• Successful learners acquire subject-specific knowledge and skills, allowing them to generate great applied work in a variety of assessment formats. Our students become determined to do their absolute best in their work. This analytical framework will serve them well in their future employment and as learners. 

• Confident individuals capable of meeting the demands of an ever-changing health and social care environment. Leading safe, healthy, and satisfying lifestyles while successfully transitioning to employment, training, and higher education. 

• Responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society and uphold “British values” through discussion of current affairs within our Health and Social Care lessons. 

The rationale in Health and Social Care:  

• Developing a broad body of knowledge and a thorough understanding of Health and Social Care principles across the curriculum, while also providing chances for enrichment. 

• Providing each student with the cultural capital required to become a "well-rounded individual" with good British values and attitudes that promote physical and emotional well-being. 

• Stretching every student to meet higher grading requirements by developing a culture of self-belief, giving explicit explanations and models to scaffold learning, and focusing questions and feedback on improving learning outcomes. 

• Providing students with confidence in critical transferable abilities such as oracy, reading, writing, and numeracy as they tackle the challenges of an increasingly globalised world. 

• Providing students with opportunities to work individually and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary manner so that they can gain new knowledge in a logical sequence, resulting in a deeper understanding and the ability to exhibit their skills.    

• Building continuity and growth from KS4 to KS5, ensuring that every student has the chance to effectively transition to aspirational paths (that suit their needs and ambitions) after 16 and 18.
