Statement of intent

Dance and Performing arts

At Featherstone High School the Performing Arts faculty forms a valuable part of the students’ school experience. Our ethos is to give students a variety of in-class and extracurricular activities and opportunities through all the arts.  We are passionate about working together as a team and strive to give pupils high quality experiences in lessons as well as many performance and back stage experiences outside of lessons.  Through Dance we deliver an enriching and purposeful experience by delivering a diverse curriculum.  By incorporating the elements below into a dance curriculum, we aim to inspire students to lead healthier lifestyles, be creative, and develop a wide range of valuable skills that will benefit them both inside and outside the dance studio.

Healthy Lifestyle

By engaging in regular dance classes, students not only improve their physical health but also develop an appreciation for the importance of staying active. Dance encourages cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, strength, and coordination, all of which contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

Enjoyment

We want our students to enjoy Dance, unlike traditional forms of exercise, dance is inherently enjoyable and expressive. We want students to celebrate their progress and achievements along the way no matter how small they are. Students set personal goals and overcome challenges along the way. This fosters a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence as students see themselves improve over time.

Transferable Skills

The skills developed through dance, such as discipline, focus, perseverance, creativity, and adaptability, are highly transferable to other areas of life. Whether in academics, careers, or personal pursuits, students can apply these skills to achieve success in various contexts.

Teamwork

Many dance styles require collaboration and teamwork, whether it's partner work in ballroom dancing or ensemble pieces in contemporary dance. Through group rehearsals and performances, students learn to communicate effectively, cooperate with others, and support their peers, essential skills for success in any collaborative environment.

Expression

Dance is a form of expression. Use it as a platform to convey your emotions, stories, and ideas. Whether you're interpreting a piece of music or creating your own choreography, let your personality shine through your movements.

Problem Solving

In dance, students often encounter challenges such as learning complex choreography, mastering difficult techniques, or adapting to different styles of movement. Through problem-solving and critical thinking, students develop strategies to overcome these obstacles, building resilience and perseverance in the process.
